Using the notion of territorialization, the text traces connecting points between classical American pragmatism and contemporary Latin American philosophy as an effort to counter the usual criticism that states that because of its origins in the north of the continent pragmatism has nothing to offer to the construction of any sound philosophy in the south, while recognizing that its history, that of pragmatism, can be read in parallel of the history of the ways in which Latina American philosophies were built (...) since the beginning of the 20th century. After drug and weapon trafficking, trafficking of women is one of the most lucrative businesses in the world. According to sociologists César Rey Hernández and Luisa Hernández Angueira in People Trafficking in Puerto Rico: The Challenge of Invisibility (2010), fifty percent of the victims are women and minors. This translates to 2.7 million women and girls that are enslaved in this inhuman business. Puerto Rico is no exception. One of its main problems is the slavery of Dominican women (...) who, in search of a better life in Puerto Rico, are lured to illegally migrate to the island for better opportunities. However, once in the new territory, they are imprisoned and forced to become prostitutes. In addition, femicide is another world-wide pressing issue. The World Health Organization (WHO) affirms that violence against women, between fifteen and forty-four years of age, is the leading cause of death, more than cancer, malaria, car accidents and war combined, and the report ‘A Gendered Analysis of Violent Death’, compiled by Small Arms Survey Center, fourteen out of twenty-five countries with the highest rates of femicide in the world are in Latin America and the Caribbean. This essay focuses on Life is a Sexually Transmittable Disease (2014) by Wilfredo Mattos Cintron. In this novel, the enslaved-immigrant girls and women constitute an ‘injured body’, a body that is merely diminished. The third-world prostitute’s body is the material side of male-controlled dominance, subjugation and violence. Mattos Cintron’s text denounces the ‘suffering body of women’—rape, kidnapping, beating, femicide, their exclusion from human rights and sexual relegation. Moreover, along with patriarchy’s power and the socioeconomic variables as responsible agents of creating the injured body, globalization and capitalism objectify and make women’s bodies currency of the system. In this paper, we argue that lesbian couples who wish to have children who are genetically related to both of them should be allowed access to mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRTs). First, we provide a brief explanation of mitochondrial diseases and MRTs. We then present the reasons why MRTs are not, by nature, therapeutic. The upshot of the view that MRTs are non-therapeutic techniques is that their therapeutic potential cannot be invoked for restricting their use only to those cases where a (...) mitochondrial DNA disease could be ‘cured’. We then argue that a positive case for MRTs is justified by an appeal to reproductive freedom, and that the criteria to access these techniques should hence be extended to include lesbian couples who wish to share genetic parenthood. Finally, we consider a potential objection to our argument: that the desire to have genetically related kin is not a morally sufficient reason to allow lesbian couples to access MRTs. (shrink)

In this paper I argue that some human reproductive genome editing interventions can be therapeutic in nature, and thus that it is false that all such interventions just create healthy individuals. I do this by showing that the conditions established by a therapy definition are met by certain reproductive genome editing interventions. I then defend this position against two objections: (a) reproductive genome editing interventions do not attain one of the two conditions for something to be a therapy, and (b) (...) some reproductive genome editing interventions are therapeutic but in a nonstandard way. In the Conclusion I call for a more nuanced discussion of the nature of reproductive genome editing interventions. (shrink)

The capability approach is gaining momentum as a theory of corporate responsibility and business ethics at a time when the UN Guiding Principles have become a most important framework. A novel approach is now emerging that seeks to understand and specify human rights obligations of businesses within the framework provided by the capability approach. This article partially examines the triad corporate responsibility–human rights–capability approach by exploring the relationship between human rights and capabilities. Thus, it offers conceptual and practical implications for (...) a human rights perspective on corporate responsibility. The bulk of our thesis focuses on studying Nussbaum’s and Sen’s claim that human rights are entitlements to capabilities by means of a discussion of the notion of human dignity. In particular, we show the capability approach’s ability to dissipate theoretical and practical challenges posed by the notion of dignity. This article does not offer a detailed explanation of the implications of our investigation for human rights responsibilities of business. However, an outline of its potential contribution toward unfolding those obligations, conceptually and practically, is provided. (shrink)

In this paper, we argue that a rich phenomenological description of ?sweet tension? is an important step to understanding how and why sport is a meaningful human endeavour. We introduce the phenomenological concepts of intersubjectivity and horizon and elaborate how they inform the study and understanding of human experience. In the process, we establish that intersubjectivity is always embodied, developing and ethically committed. Likewise, we establish that our horizons are experienced from an embodied, developing and ethically committed perspective that serves (...) as the possibility for new intersubjective engagement. What follows is a discussion of the explanatory role of intersubjectivity and horizon in elucidating experiences of sweet tension in and through sport. The phenomenological account of sweet tension provides insights into the significance of our sporting experiences. Indeed, taking phenomenology seriously represents a commitment to descriptively elucidate what makes such experiences of sport significant and why we long for them. Recognising that sweet tension is a form of intersubjective horizon opens up new avenues for addressing ethical issues in sport as well as in crafting well-balanced games. (shrink)

Recent breakthroughs in stem cell differentiation and reprogramming suggest that functional human gametes could soon be created in vitro. While the ethical debate on the uses of in vitro generated gametes (IVG) was originally constrained by the fact that they could be derived only from embryonic stem cell lines, the advent of somatic cell reprogramming, with the possibility to easily derive human induced pluripotent stem cells from any individual, affords now a major leap in the feasibility of IVG derivation and (...) in the scope of their potential applications. In this paper we develop an ethical framework, rooted in recent scientific evidence, to support a robust experimental pipeline that could enable the first-in-human use of IVG. We then apply this framework to the following objectives: (1) a clarification of the genetic parenting options afforded by IVG, along with their ethical underpinnings; (2) a defence of the use of IVG to remedy infertility, broadening their scope to same-sex couples; (3) an assessment of the most far-reaching implications of IVG for multiplex parenting. These include, first, the liberation of parenting roles from the constraints of biological generations in vivo, allowing multiple individuals to engage in genetic parenting together, thus blurring the distinction between biological and social generations. Second, we discuss the conflation of IVG with sequencing technology and its implications for the possibility that prospective parents may choose among a hitherto unprecedented number of potential children. In view of these perspectives, we argue that, contrary to the exhausted paradigm according to which society lags behind science, IVG may represent instead a salient and most visible instance where biotechnological ingenuity could be used in pursuit of social experimentation. This study delved into the Senior High School Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) track in Bohol Province for the 2022-2023 school year, aiming to evaluate policy implementation, recognize barriers, and propose interventions. Employing a mixed-method approach, integrating quantitative-descriptive surveys and qualitative-descriptive research methods as recommended by Creswell and Plano Clark (2017), the findings unveiled a predominantly positive perception of policy implementation across various dimensions of the TVL track. These encompass curriculum development, teacher training, resource allocation, industry partnerships, assessment and evaluation, student support services, (...) monitoring and quality assurance, policy adaptation and improvement, stakeholder engagement, legal framework and compliance, data collection and analysis, and inclusivity and equity. Despite variations among teachers and administrators, a general commitment to policy implementation emerged. The study identified barriers in curriculum and instruction, readiness and preparedness, resource limitations, and teaching and learning, emphasizing evidence-based strategies and interdisciplinary approaches to surmount challenges. It underscores the crucial role of research and policy development in elevating the quality and efficacy of TVL education. (shrink)

La importancia que ha adquirido el ChatGPT en el mundo académico universitario en la actualidad es muy trascendente. El estudio propone validar algunas de las variables predictoras, como la eficiencia en la adquisición de información, creatividad, competencia en la escritura, competencia lingüística, rendimiento académico y satisfacción con el propósito de generar instrumentos para la investigación con atributos de fiabilidad y validez. El estudio se realizó en Perú, con una muestra de 400 estudiantes universitarios de ambos sexos. Se utilizaron pruebas de (...) análisis factorial exploratorio y confirmatorio. Para este estudio, se utilizaron análisis factoriales exploratorios y confirmatorios. In the literature on enculturation—the thesis according to which higher cognitive capacities result from transformations in the brain driven by culture—numerical cognition is often cited as an example. A consequence of the enculturation account for numerical cognition is that individuals cannot acquire numerical competence if a symbolic system for numbers is not available in their cultural environment. This poses a problem for the explanation of the historical origins of numerical concepts and symbols. When a numeral system had not been created (...) yet, people did not have the opportunity to acquire number concepts. But, if people did not have number concepts, how could they ever create a symbolic system for numbers? Here I propose an account of the invention of symbolic systems for numbers by anumeric people in the remote past that is compatible with the enculturation thesis. I suggest that symbols for numbers and number concepts may have emerged at the same time through the re-semantification of words whose meanings were originally non-numerical. (shrink)

In this paper we attempt to discuss how the logos categorical approach to quantum mechanics is able to provide an objective formal account of the notion of entanglement—completely independent of both purity and separability—in terms of the potential coding of intensive relations and effective relations. We will show how our novel redefinition allows us to provide an anschaulich content (...) to the notion of entanglement, erasing in this way the “spookiness” still present within its orthodox understanding in terms of space-time separated collapse particles. Texto de presentación para el monográfico _De São Paulo a Puebla: la izquierda iberoamericana entre el retorno y la transformación (1990-2024)._.

El artículo estudia la emergencia de testimonios de torturados durante la dictadura militar y posteriormente de testimonios de víctimas de abusos sexuales y de conciencia por parte de sacerdotes chilenos, postulando que estamos frente un nuevo tipo de testimonio que emerge de situaciones de violencia. La pesquisa realiza un análisis semiótico de estos relatos estudiando axiomas que caracterizan este tipo de texto sosteniendo que estos textos poseen una relevancia epistémica y teológica esencial para la superación de la crisis eclesial.

Este artigo propõe pensar a crítica de Dostoiévski à razão em Memórias do Subsolo como uma crítica contra a modernidade ocidental. Para isso, é necessário entender o contexto russo do século XIX e como ocorre uma espécie de “importação de ideias” da Europa ocidental para a Rússia, provocando no país as mesmas consequências da Europa, como o niilismo. Entende-se que o niilismo é um fenômeno moderno derivado das novas filosofias que emergem nesse período e, portanto, o niilismo ocorre também na (...) Rússia, motivo pelo qual muitos autores, entre eles Dostoiévski, refletem sobre essa questão. Para compreender a crítica de Dostoiévski à modernidade, precisa-se levar em consideração que o niilismo não é apenas um “problema filosófico”, mas também possui uma dimensão social. Logo, a crítica é em relação à sociedade russa. Para a execução de tal proposta, toma-se de empréstimo a definição de niilismo de Franco Volpi a fim de estabelecer uma relação com o niilismo tal como se desenvolvia na Rússia. (shrink)

News about the first baby born after a mitochondrial replacement technique (MRT; specifically maternal spindle transfer) broke on September 27, 2016 and, in a matter of hours, went global. Of special interest was the fact that the mitochondrial replacement procedure happened in Mexico. One of the scientists behind this world first was quoted as having said that he and his team went to Mexico to carry out the procedure because, in Mexico, there are no rules. In this paper, we explore (...) Mexico's rule of law in relation to mitochondrial replacement techniques and show that, in fact, certain instances of MRTs are prohibited at the federal level and others are prohibited at the state level. According to our interpretation of the law, the scientists behind this first successful MRT procedure broke federal regulations regarding assisted fertilization research. (shrink)

This article aims to thematize the experience of isolation that, for Gadamer, characterizes the way of inhabiting the lifeworld which is determined by technification. We maintain that friendship can face isolation affecting our historical situation. To develop this argument the article is divided into two parts: In the first one, we describe the areas where the condition of isolation and self-alienation is made manifest. In the second, we make clear that the experience of friendship allows us to cope with the (...) condition of the isolation, that is, we discuss how friendship is a horizon leading to recover the ontological condition of our linked self-comprehension, a condition that increasingly blurs with the technological world. O presente artigo apresenta uma análise filosófica do conto _Um discurso sobre o método _escrito por Sérgio Sant’Anna. O objetivo da análise é demonstrar que o conto é construído como um esforço de mímesis da filosofia cartesiana. Parte-se do pressuposto que o texto artístico comporta múltiplas interpretações, principalmente quando construído em diálogo com a filosofia. Do tema em destaque, o cartesianismo defende a ideia de que a subjetividade é um dado radical sem ligação com o entorno material, social e cultural. (...) Todavia, o contista contemporâneo discorda deste isolamento e constrói uma narrativa na qual o ‘eu’ é descoberto através de vários métodos. Com isto amplia-se a compreensão hodierna de que o sujeito não está fechado sobre parâmetros científicos estritos, e sim se abre a inúmeras manifestações fenomênicas. Esta análise literária e filosófica vai amparada nos conceitos analíticos de Gerard Genette em _O discurso da narrativa, _assim como em concepções literárias de Edgar Allan Poe, Júlio Cortázar e Ricardo Piglia além, é claro, de algumas obras de René Descartes. O resultado alcançado é um exercício especulativo que, à primeira vista, parece uma crítica ao puro cartesianismo, mas que, ao contrário, se posiciona como um complemento que reconhece e amplia os caminhos da modernidade para o estudo do ‘eu’. Em acréscimo indicam-se semelhanças entre o conto e a obra de Descartes, o que reforça nossa tese de mímesis e complementariedade entre a obra literária e a filosófica. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo se aborda el significado de los límites de la dialéctica en el pensamiento de Marx, lo que permite determinar la diferencia fundamental que separa la concepción marxiana de la dialéctica de la concepción hegeliana. Para analizar lo que significa para Marx este concepto es necesario distinguir entre el desarrollo conceptual de la exposición y el lugar que le corresponde a la investigación de la evolución histórica, de lo cual nos ocupamos en los primeros apartados del trabajo. Muito se tem falado acerca de avaliação unitária do que é publicado, mas pouco se tem discutido acerca dos veículos que asseguram todo o processo de avaliação. Trata-se de um interesse ingente da época – e interesse parece uma roupa bem mais leve para encobrir a palavra moda – que recai sobre a cientometria, que é o Cíclope que domina e percorre o grande domínio da produção científica atual. Sua ingente tarefa é metrificar essa produção científica pelo número de citações. (...) Mas esse Cíclope não poderia estar a fazer seus trabalhos de modo tão incansável nas oficinas do norte do globo terrestre, forjando incansavelmente números sobre números, coletando citações de citações, erigindo estatísticas e mais estatísticas, sem que os resultados de seus esforços não desabassem pesadamente sobre a pós-graduação brasileira. Não se precisa ir longe para entender fenomenologicamente esse processo, nem se precisa vasculhar a bibliografia especializada em busca de alguma explicação complicada e abstrata. Basta olharmos as lives recentes do período da pandemia, de 2020, e se perguntar por que brotaram em tão grande número, e por que tantas pessoas com perfil especializado acorreram às suas discussões. No final das contas, em um processo de avaliação sem coparticipação, elas foram o único modo de expressão e organização espontânea de grupos de pesquisa muito bem enraizados e que têm levado à frente a produção científica do país há décadas. Foram esses grupos que se organizaram, espontaneamente, para dar vazão à própria voz, e para dizer que passarão a ser avaliados por critérios que nunca nortearam a própria produção. É claro que se pode argumentar que os critérios de avaliação da produção científica sempre podem e devem ser alterados, e que sempre o foram historicamente. De qualquer modo, haveria de se discutir seriamente se o critério aplicável a um quadriênio poderia ser definido no final desse quadriênio, quando todas as opções editoriais, por parte dos periódicos, e de escolha de veiculação, por parte dos pesquisadores, já foram feitas, e se encontram cimentadas e encerradas. Também seria importante discutir se deve haver um mínimo de continuidade na passagem de um sistema de avaliação a outro, e qual seria o tempo adequado de adaptação aos futuros novos critérios que viessem a ser adotados. Fatores simples e imediatos da produção científica, bem assentados há tempos, parecem escapar à CAPES: que o impacto de trabalhos na área básica das ciências é bem diferente do impacto de artigos nas áreas que delas se ramificam; que algumas pesquisas tem interesse específico ou fortemente regional, justamente porque resolvem problemas acentuadamente aderidos a um contexto; que a língua em que se publicam trabalhos deve atender à integração e à formação de uma grande comunidade de pesquisadores; que a forte presença de artigos internacionais em um periódico pode expressar a força desse veículo, mas também pode indicar que ele atende principalmente interesses de pesquisa alheios à comunidade nacional, deixando de parte a missão de fortalecer o seu núcleo de pesquisadores, etc. E isso é apenas uma parte da história. Ainda caberia perguntar, no tocante à avidez de cientometria, qual o conúbio de interesses que ela atende: quem recolhe esses dados; com que interesses o faz; como seleciona e padroniza os dados que divulga; como os disponibiliza; como vende o seu acesso; como determina políticas de produção do conhecimento científico ao assim proceder, etc. Uma coisa é certa, todo esse conjunto de questões passa ao largo de nossos gestores, preocupados em avaliar os PPG’s a partir da produção atomizada de seus pesquisadores. Os periódicos, que são o veículo da produção, nunca entraram em questão. Altamente penalizados com todas as políticas que visam avaliá-los, nunca foram convidados a participar desse debate. Na visão de cima para baixo, são o polo passivo, lábil, sempre pronto a se adequar aos supostos objetivos maiores que os ultrapassam. É notável como os periódicos, que sobrevivem em sua maior parte por si próprios, são tratados como algo de pouca monta, como se fosse indiferente a sua contribuição na divulgação do conhecimento científico. Eles são vistos como um produto da evolução em sua concepção mais crua: estabeleçamos os critérios e que sobrevivam os melhores. Muito deveria e deve ser falado sobre uma política para os periódicos, mas, para não ficarmos em lamentações nesse fechamento de quadriênio, vamos entrar no terreno dos avaliadores, para averiguar a consistência da proposta de quem nos avalia. Sob muitos ângulos que se analise, sempre será direto argumentar que o fator de impacto – principal critério erigido para o encerrado quadriênio – é uma métrica importante para a avaliação. Concedamos superficialmente que isso é pertinente para avaliar a produção unitária de cada pesquisador. Muita gente imposta a voz para nos advertir sobre o quão responsável é proceder de tal modo. Ainda assim caberia a pertinente pergunta: Em que o fator de impacto seria útil não para se avaliar a importância de um periódico, mas para uma agência estimular e aprimorar a veiculação da produção do conhecimento científico? Pode um periódico que não veicula a produção em área básica ser avaliado em nível de igualdade com outro que tem esse perfil? Se um periódico centra seus esforços em uma subárea restrita de conhecimento, pode ele ser subavaliado por ter esse recorte editorial? Para entramos no terreno prescritivo, sempre perigoso para a vida da ciência, também podemos indagar: “Deve” um periódico publicar maiormente (nota bene, essa é uma questão para o avaliador, e só ele, responder) os assuntos que reconhecidamente têm tendência a ter um maior fator de impacto? “Deve” um periódico ter como sua missão editorial prioritária publicar artigos com alto fator de impacto, e se organizar para tanto, uma vez que isso passa a medir sua excelência? E indo mais além, e penetrando no fulcro do processo de avaliação, também é pertinente perguntar: Se o fator de impacto é o do artigo citado, pode um pesquisador, que tenha publicado em um periódico de alto fator de impacto, ser bem avaliado justamente pelos outros artigos que ali se encontram e que erigiram aquele fator de impacto? Um artigo de pequeno fator de impacto, publicado junto com outro de elevado fator de impacto, pode receber a métrica que seria atribuída ao periódico? Pode, por fim, o periódico ser responsabilizado por uma métrica geral que será atribuída a cada pesquisador? Fundamentalmente é preciso se perguntar: Em que essa medida aprimora e melhora o processo de avaliação? De que modo ela ajusta os critérios de justiça, para ter um processo mais equitativo para todos os envolvidos? Em que parte das decisões tomadas para o encerrado quadriênio alguém deixou um mínimo expediente concreto voltado para valorizar e aprimorar a contribuição dos veículos que asseguram a mediação de todo o processo, a saber, os periódicos? Para evitar fazer um Qualis dos Artigos, decidiu-se fazer um Qualis dos Periódicos, e agora nos encontramos em um momento em que essa proposta exibe toda a sua inconsistência para os mediadores, porque ela descentra o editor com questões alheias à veiculação do conhecimento científico. E de maneira irracional, sem direito à instância de apelação, sem um necessário norte estabelecido antes dos crivos orientadores do processo, nos entregaremos agora a um processo de avaliação decidido ao final do decurso do quadriênio, e que, para salvar mais um herói internacional, a ciclópica cientometria, desconsidera todo o esforço histórico dos periódicos para veicular e publicizar a produção científica no país. Isso posto, passemos então à apresentação do septuagésimo segundo número, que sobreviveu a esse quadriênio, e viçou em terreno impróprio, contra todas as regras, antieuclidianamente. [...]. (shrink)

Esse texto procura estabelecer a conexão entre o opúsculo “Sobre o primeiro fundamento da distinção de direções no espaço” (GUGR), de 1768, e a Crítica da razão pura (KrV), de 1781, procurando evidenciar que há um programa de pesquisa de Kant sobre a estrutura do espaço que principia com as reflexões estabelecidas a partir das contrapartidas incongruentes. Para defender esse argumento, há uma grande dificuldade, pois Kant não se reporta às contrapartidas incongruentes no texto da primeira crítica. São vários os (...) comentadores que se reportam a esse fato para minorar a importância do texto de 1768 para a constituição da estética teórica. Para caracterizar a importância das contrapartidas incongruentes para o pensamento crítico, procuraremos examinar uma tese do espaço exposta nos Prolegômenos a toda a metafísica futura (Prol), de 1783, que é a de que somente o todo é fundamento de possibilidade das partes. Se os Prolegômenos fazem o caminho invertido, o do método analítico, e a Crítica da razão pura percorre o caminho sintético, quais seriam, nesse caso, as condições de possibilidade de uma estética que deveria ser construída a priori? Ao analisar essa questão, procuraremos mostrar que a sua solução depende das contrapartidas incongruentes nos Prolegômenos, e que ela é igualmente decisiva para a construção da Estética Transcendental. Infinitude and mereology in the construction of Kant’s theoretical aesthetics Abstract: The aim of this text is to establish the connection between the 1768 essay “Concerning the ultimate ground of the differentiation of directions in space” (GUGR) and the 1781 Critique of Pure Reason (KrV), seeking to show that Kant has a research program regarding the structure of space that begins with reflections established from incongruent counterparts. There is considerable difficulty in defending this argument, because Kant does not refer to incongruent counterparts in the text of the first critique. Several commentators have referred to this fact to downplay the importance of the 1768 text for constituting theoretical aesthetics. To characterize the importance of incongruent counterparts for critical thinking, we examine a thesis on space presented in the Prolegomena To Any Future Metaphysics (Prol), of 1783, which is that only the whole is the ground for the possibility of the parts. If the Prolegomena take the opposite route, that of the analytical method, and the Critique of Pure Reason follows the synthetic route, what, in this case, would be the conditions for the possibility of an aesthetic that should be constructed a priori? In analyzing this question, we seek to show that its solution depends on the incongruent counterparts in the Prolegomena, and that it is equally decisive for constructing Transcendental Aesthetics. Infinitud y mereología en la construcción de la estética teórica de Kant Resumen: El presente texto busca establecer la conéxion entre el opúsculo “Sobre el fundamento primero de la diferencia entre las regiones del espacio” (GUGR), de 1768, y la Crítica de la razón pura (KrV), de 1781, intentando evidenciar que hay un programa de investigación de Kant sobre la estructura del espacio que empieza con las reflexiones establecidas a partir de las contrapartidas incongruentes. Para defender ese argumento, hay una gran dificultad, pues Kant no se reporta a las contrapartidas incongruentes en el texto de la primera crítica. Son varios los comentadores que se reportan a ese hecho para minimizar la importancia del texto de 1768 para la constitución de la estética teórica. Para caracterizar la importancia de las contrapartidas incongruentes para el pensamiento crítico, procuraremos examinar una tesis del espacio expuesta en los Prolegómenos a toda metafísica futura (Prol), de 1783, que es de que solamente el todo es fundamento de posibilidad de las partes. La teoría de Arendt sobre el concepto de acción es compleja, debido a que ella lo aborda desde diversas perspectivas, sin llegar a clarificar plenamente los contornos que definen este concepto central. Esta constatación permite plantear la hipótesis de que en Arendt hay diversas teorías de la acción; en primer lugar, la acción se presenta como una actividad meramente política, pero también puede haber acción violenta y por eso mismo tener efectos negativos sobre la política, y, en sentido amplio, la (...) acción puede llegar a intervenir en la naturaleza. Este trabajo realiza sucesivos acercamientos a la “acción”; para ello, en primer lugar presenta la relación entre la acción política, su relación con el concepto de praxis y su diferencia con la producción. En segundo lugar, da cuenta de la pluralidad como condición propia de la acción, posteriormente se ocupa del problema del inicio de la acción, para luego dirigir la atención al espacio en el que ella se realiza, sus relaciones con la historia y así, finalmente, presentar los elementos básicos de su estructura y función. Several objections against the morality of researching or employing mitochondrial replacement techniques have been advanced recently. In this paper, I examine three of these objections and show that they are found wanting. First I examine whether mitochondrial replacement techniques, research and clinical practice, should not be carried out because of possible harms to egg donors. Next I assess whether mitochondrial replacement techniques should be banned because they could affect the study of genealogical ancestry. Finally, I examine the claim that mitochondrial (...) replacement techniques are not transferring mitochondrial DNA but nuclear DNA, and that this should be prohibited on ethical grounds. (shrink)

Cultural diversity is an inescapable reality and a concern in many businesses where it can often raise ethical questions and dilemmas. This paper aims to offer suggestions to certain problems facing managers in dealing with cultural diversity through the inspiration of Thomas Aquinas. Although he may be perceived as a voice from the distant past, we can still find in his writings helpful and original ideas and criteria. He welcomes cultural differences as a part of the perfection of the universe. (...) His systemic approach leads one to place the problem in its proper context, and to reflect on it from the perspective of virtue ethics, with a central role for practical wisdom and giving primacy to neighborly love and natural moral law. Rather than a set of rigid standards with no consideration of diversity Aquinas focuses on the common human ground, which allows for the indispensable dialogue between different positions. When dealing with practical questions, the problem is one of finding the right balance between general principle and cultural specifics, tolerance, and dialogue, always guided by practical wisdom. In this way, Aquinas’ approach is neither rigid ethical universalism with no consideration for diversity nor moral relativism with no place for any transcultural and absolute morals. (shrink)

Some Comments on de Melo-Martin and Harris.

Pretendemos neste artigo apresentar uma aproximação crítica com relação à filosofia desenvolvida pelos chamados megáricos, em face sobretudo da figura de Euclides de Mégara como representante e líder dessa linhagem de pensamento. O enfoque será feito tendo em vista o tipo de filosofia exposta e praticada por Euclides, a partir das acusações que contra ela se fizeram denunciando-a como pura erística, ou seja, a disputa e o debate entre discursos com o único objetivo de obter vitória na argumentação. O que (...) se constata em Euclides é a defesa da prática do debate com a finalidade de mostrar que o discurso é incapaz de dar conta da realidade, de um modo geral, e assim impossível de determinar, de um modo específico, o Ser e a Unidade que são a essência daquilo que organiza e move todas as coisas. Essa essência de ordem é desejável por ser boa, e o Bem se apresenta, assim, como fundamento da realidade. Os estudos sobre a tradição megárica dividem-se entre a influência dos eleatas e a influência de Sócrates. Faremos, desse modo, a defesa de que a filosofia de Euclides está afinada com o socratismo, conjugando de um modo exemplar aquilo que os eleatas haviam definido em relação ao Ser. (shrink)

In this work I present a detailed critique of the dignity-related arguments that have been advanced against the creation of human–nonhuman chimeras that could possess human-like mental capacities. My main claim is that the arguments so far advanced are incapable of grounding a principled objection against the creation of such creatures. I conclude that these arguments have one, or more, of the following problems: they confuse the ethical assessment of the creation of chimeras with the ethical assessment of how such (...) creatures would be treated in specific contexts, they misrepresent how a being could be treated solely as means towards others’ ends, they fall short of demonstrating how humanity’s dignity would be violated by the creation of such entities, and they fail to properly characterise the moral responsibilities that moral agents have towards other moral agents and sentient beings. In this essay, I explore the question concerning truthmakers for attributions of memory of events, which I express with the schema “S remembers E”. To answer this question, I distinguish remembering in the descriptive sense, which is based on subjective experience, from remembering in the normative sense, which requires some correspondence with actual past events. As a method of approaching attributions of memory, I will use the method of cases. Based on this method, I address the metaphysical problem of the (...) past as the ontological foundation of present truths about memories. This approach, in turn, leads us to a critical analysis of Aristotle's solution, which focuses on the mode of consideration of a mental image. I conclude that while the Aristotelian approach offers valuable insights, a contemporary theory of truthmakers for memory attributions must incorporate elements of the philosophy of memory in order to adequately address the complexities of memory attributions. In response to the COVID‐19 pandemic philosophers and governments have proposed scarce resource allocation guidelines. Their purpose is to advise healthcare professionals on how to ethically allocate scarce medical resources. One challenging feature of the pandemic has been the large numbers of patients needing mechanical ventilatory support. Guidelines have paradigmatically focused on the question of what doctors should do if they have fewer ventilators than patients who need respiratory support: which patient should get the ventilator? There is, however, an important (...) higher level allocation problem. Namely, how are we to ethically distribute newly obtained ventilators across hospitals: which hospital should get the ventilator(s)? In this paper, we identify a set of principles for allocating newly obtained ventilators across hospitals. We focus particularly on low and middle income countries, who frequently have limited pre‐existing intensive care capacity, and have needed to source additional ventilators. We first provide some background. Second, we argue that the main population healthcare aim during the COVID‐19 pandemic should be to save the most lives. Next, we assess a series of potential heuristics or principles that could be used to guide allocation: allocation to the most densely populated cities, random allocation, allocation based on the ratio of patients to ICU personnel, prioritisation in terms of intrahospital mortality, prioritisation of younger populations, and prioritisation in terms of population mortality. We conclude by providing a plausible ranking of the principles, while noting a number of epistemological challenges, in terms of how they best further the aim of increasing the probability of saving the most lives. Children created through mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRTs) are commonly presented as possessing 50% of their mother’s nuclear DNA, 50% of their father’s nuclear DNA and the mitochondrial DNA of an egg donor. This lab-engineered genetic composition has prompted two questions: Do children who are the product of an MRT procedure have threegeneticparents? And, do MRT egg donors have parental responsibilities for the children created? In this paper, I address the second question and in doing so I also address the first (...) one. First, I present a brief account of mitochondrial diseases and MRTs. Second, I examine how MRTs affect the numerical identity of eggs and zygotes. Third, I investigate two genetic accounts of parenthood and MRT egg donation. Fourth, I explore three causal accounts of parenthood and MRT egg donation. My conclusion is that, under the appropriate circumstances, MRT egg donors are parentally responsible for the children created under genetic accounts of parenthood and under causal accounts of parenthood. Neste artigo apresentamos, de forma concisa e em português, alguns elementos-chave dos principais debates contemporâneos na filosofia da memória. Nosso principal objetivo é tornar essas discussões mais acessíveis aos leitores de língua portuguesa, fornecendo uma atualização importante para esforços anteriores (Sant’Anna & Michaelian, 2019a). Começamos introduzindo a noção de viagem no tempo mental, a qual estabelece a base empírica para a metodologia empregada em trabalhos recentes, antes de apresentar dois debates centrais. Primeiro, o debate entre causalistas e simulacionistas sobre a (...) teoria da lembrança filosoficamente correta (§2). Segundo, o debate entre continuístas e descontinuístas sobre a relação entre lembrança episódica e certas formas de imaginação (em particular, o pensamento episódico acerca do futuro) (§3). Na segunda parte do artigo, apresentamos e exploramos dois tópicos de discussão crescente: a natureza do sentimento de passado característico da memória episódica (§4) e questões de meta-nível relativas ao próprio caráter das controvérsias exploradas na primeira parte do artigo (§5). Anti-exceptionalists about logic claim that logical methodology is not different from scientific methodology when it comes to theory choice. Two anti-exceptionalist accounts of theory choice in logic are abductivism and predictivism. These accounts have in common reliance on pre-theoretical logical intuitions for the assessment of candidate logical theories. In this paper, I investigate whether intuitions can provide what abductivism and predictivism want from them and conclude that they do not. As an alternative to these approaches, I propose a Carnapian view (...) on logical theorizing according to which logical theories do not simply account for pre-theoretical intuitions, but rather improve on them. In this account, logical theories are ameliorative, rather than representational. (shrink)
